Talking Smoking: Does it harm our reptiles?

This topic has come up a couple of times in conversations I've had with other members here.

Me, being the very wary n00by keeper that I am have opted to put my royal, A.purpurea and G.rosea into my bedroom as I am a smoker and do not smoke in my bedroom. I think of the small lungs being that of a child (well they are my children Click here to enlarge) and how harmful smoking can be around them, even the smoke that clings to your clothes. I know, extreme... but you get the idea.

Anyhoo... after talking to some, they do smoke around their pets. (Which, if my fear of harming my girls is -just- rubbish means I can really expand my wish list for my one bedroomed flat.)

Now, does smoking effect our reps/spiders in the same way it can effect a human? Am I just being uber paranoid beginner about doing wrong by my girls? Or is there some validity in my reasoning.

    Members of S.E.R.F...

    ...please discuss and perhaps enlighten.

I dont know if smoking affects the animals, but i dont think you are being paranoid. I am not a smoker myself, but personally, I would rather not let anyone smoke near my pets..
I might be daft but I'm not stupid!!

interesting to hear peoples views on this. we dont smoke around them in general although there has been a few odd times marley has been out running about when someone has been smoking. would always take care to make sure they werent directly in the smoke or that tho as thats just not fair on them. generally always have the windows open too to circulate the air. something to think about tho! xx

Side Note: My gran used to put her fags out in her garden right next to the door step and said they it helped feed the plants and tbh ... the plants thrived. Coulda been grannies green fingers though lol

Right on sean, pdf works for me great post

Just wanna point out that snakes only have one lung so the damage will be done quicker. Spiders dont have lungs per say but have "spiricals" (or called someting similar) which would undoubtedly suffer. I would advise against air freshners or just spraying any chemicals in the air which will be inhaled by them.

Also to any smokers out there I would def scrub my hands after smoking and before handling to be cautious and perhaps reduce chance of being bitten (couple of smoking mates of mine swear they are bitten when hand smells of nicotine)

Oh, I definately do scrub my hands. I've never went near them after just putting out a cig but I do like to make sure I have clean hands before and after handling.

I did read somewhere about the air fresheners causing problems, hence no spritzing of perfume in my bedroom either. Hope it doesn't stink heh

I've had a glance at the pdf, though I'm not sure it's bedtime reading so will read it tomorrow, but from what I've seen it is very interesting. Thank you.

And thanks to all the comments.

I personally hate people who smoke "for others" thats the so called saying I use, coz of this smoking ban in pubs etc I see more people driving around in cars smoking, with kids in the back, helpless to do anything about it, so god help the reptiles trapped in vivs etc in houses, having to put up with people smoking non stop.

I blame the smoking ban, may have made it better for the general public, in places such as pubs, restaurants etc, but talking from the view point of someone who has serious lung problems, I do believe that come time, this ban will cause more damage in the long run, to our kids, who wont feel the effects of passive smoking till they are in their 30's +.

so in effect............the reptiles have no chance!

Anyone actually have an animal actually DIE because of their smoking? Or even fall ill because of smoking?

    Mmmmm, didn't think so.

All of my reps, arachnids, etc are in vivs, tubs which are sealed, with vents in the back so, and I'm only guessing here, the amount of actual smoke that actually gets to them would be extremely minimal?

Sounds, once again, like it's the old 'lets blame the smokers for EVERYTHING' argument.
I got accused of sinking the Titanic AND shooting JFK only the other day, because I'm a smoker! Jeez! Give it a rest!

Couldn't really care if people choose to smoke or not, its their choice (and someone has to keep the NHS going via taxation). If you care for your reptiles you will now smoke away from them as you are fully aware of the effects and damage that it can do.
