they dont really need it as there nocternal animials and the uv could damage there eyes i personally wouldnt use it and think most or even all dont u can get reptile glo 2.0 ect but still i wouldnt use it same as using sand it could couse impaction ect although some use it and are fine but i myself wouldnt risk it...

If you noticed the article was written by a guy from Arcadia, one of the biggest UV light producers in the UK.

I think this has been discussed on here previously and although some UV is possibly beneficial it not is in no way crucial to their husbandry. As Cool said they're primarily nocturnal and the effects of sustained UV exposure is not known, so dont risk it.

Never used it but wouldn't advise using small particulate substrates for any young geckos. I use a sand mix for my adult but some people dont because of possible impaction.

None of my leos have UV and none of them suffer without it. They get natural light through the window so have a day/night cycle. I did use UV once to try it out but noticed no difference as they spend most of the day hiding away anyhow

ok so what are people using for substrate?iv seen orchid bark? in use in Aquacadabra in edinburgh.i wanted something that was more natural to them as a desert species but i obviously dont want to use sand,my last leo died with impacted gut when i was small because of bad advice from pets r us.

Uv is not necessary but is a benefit, i dont understand why it would be "dumb" to use it and it will not damage the geckos eyes. People mean that in the case of albinos they will be extra sensitive and it would be best to dull the light.

I have kept my leos without UV for ages and havnt had a proble but over a year ago I set up an experiment with a 3ft viv, 2 female leos and Uv lighting about 5%. The leos were brighter in colour, more alert, out earlier in the evening, had a better appetite and looked much better in themselves generally.

It is a choice whether to use UV or not but where possible it is a benefit for them to have it. 2% is fine for them.

orchid bark will hold humidity so not suitable for a desert species. if you dont want to use k.roll/newspaper etc you can get a lino (thin backed) that has a sand colour and pattern and is textured for grip. Some people have used broken up slate, without sharp edges the layed it in some sand like its paved. minimises the risk of impaction but looks natural.
