    Default Kingsnake oddity

My California Kingsnake is an odd one and everyone that I've talk to about him agree. His dad is a Banana California Kingsnake, his mom is a midnight blue and yellow Banded California Kingsnake. My little three year old is smack dab in the middle of the two traits. He's got bands that connect to a strip with spots down his back. His darker markings are midnight blue like his mom. I have breeding plans for him but I want to make sure that i can get what i want from him. I want to breed him with a Blue-Eyed Lavender California Kingsnake and get babies with his pattern in Lavender coloring. Any ideas as to how I can do this?

Not really up on the genetics of kingsnakes Im afraid.

First to find out I would think would be which traits the mother and the father carry, and which of these are recessive genes and which are dominant.

Then when you know which traits you want to see in the hatchlings, if the genes you want are recessive, the male and female parents both have to carry the same recessive gene to achieve it. (you have to have 2 of the same gene come together in the ofspring for it to be visual).

If a trait you want to see in the hatchlings is a dominant gene, then one parent would be required to have the gene and the other parent a recessive of that for it to be most likely that that trait will be carried to the offspring.

Then, just to complicate matters.....some genes cancel each other out....lol.

So, you have to really study which genes are which, discover which genes the parents carry and then do your best to combine them as best as possible to get the outcome you want.

If you google kingsnake genetics you should be able to do some research on the different genes they can carry for the different morphs and how they combine.
