Thread: Neon gecko...

    Default Neon gecko...

Firstly, I take back anything I have said in defensive of these...people.
We recently popped in to buy some substrate for one of the snakes and spotted a cute little red ear slider sitting in a tank by himself. We were told he had 'a wee eye infection' and to come back in a couple of weeks. We came back two weeks later, were told he was fine so we bought him and brought him home. We noticed he'd recently been quite quiet, took him out to feed him and his eyes seem fused together. They have obviously let him go while still sick without even giving us eye drops for him. He cannot see at all. And as he cannot see - he will not eat.
Furthermore the infection could now have spread to the rest of the tank. I have no idea if there is anything that can be done for the little guy at this stage. From what I have read it could be a sign of much more serious things. The poor little guy. We're gutted.

Ok, I was upset last night, so maybe I was overly unkind.
We went back to Neon Gecko today after managing to get the wee guy to open his eyes a few times :)
They are taking him back into the shop for a week or so to give him some treatment and get him seen by the vet. They were helpful and could clearly see that they had let him go too early.
It looks like there is some hope for the wee guy - opening his eyes was a very good sign!

No they dont. 2' is a good size for a bosc. In extremes they've been known to reach a 100cm, but not common!

John in there could tell you everything about them.

John is a good guy, very smart and has given nothing but fantastic information. It was not him who was dealing with our wee guy and I don't have a bad word to say about him.

Looks like we are going to lose the wee guy. Seems he is blind and there is nothing that can be done for him. The most humane thing is to put him to sleep. RIP Hucknall. Poor wee guy. Hopefully we made his last few weeks enjoyable, better than sitting in a shop somewhere. He was loved.

Thanks Jo, I know you are in the same boat with a poorly animal. Hopefully Jassa willl come home to you. I am sure she will though - she'll be well looked after by the breeder, it's just getting a few wee feeds in her, once she gets the taste of it again she'll be back on track - our wee girl is eating fantastically now. All the best Jo, let us know how Jasmine gets on!

Hi just to add a point about neon gecko,i used to work there when it was under different owners and the shop i knew back then was the worst you couldnt imagin.i could tell you sme real horror storys, but John has turned the place around BIG time, put it this way what would you do if you walked in to a shop bought an animal and the guy serving you had a cigaret hanging out his mouth.or you were sold an animal with mouth rot and told that it wil clear up in a few days. honest. iv worked in the pet trade for many years and i can honestly say the neon gecko paisley is one of the good ones, every shop makes mistakes from time to time. the animals are always sold healthy and with the correct advice.

It was there I got Marley and they've been great. Even helped me take the viv and stuff up to the flat. They've always been more than helpful when I've went in with some no doubt silly questions so would definitely recommend them :) xx

Hope the dig about the cigarette wasn't levelled at me Don!-and that wasn't Neon Geko in my time anyway-(aint that a kinda silly name?)-liked Marineland much better! didn't half annoy the Americans!-they tried to make me re-name the shop-reckoned I was poaching their trade!-funny can't remember ever selling a sea lion or a dolphin!-had a Spectacled Cayman for a wee while till the council got upset and sent a wee man in who hadn't the first clue what it was-called it a crocodile!-asked if I had any experience with Dangerous wild animals-never even heard of Wilsons Zoo in Glasgow!-I used to play with a full grown lion in my great uncles garden!

I personally think that neon gecko is actually a good shop.
It has loads of lovely reptiles (Green tree boas, snkehead turtles, hermanns tortoises, etc...) And they are always in good clean condition. I bought my leopard gecko form there 2 weeks ago and he is doing great! At first I was worried he wasnt eating crickets. I went to neon gecko to buy mealworms, they said they were a bit too agressive for a baby leo.
One of the girls gave me plenty of great advice about feeding him.
I replaced his substrate and changed it to newspaper, and he is doing great.
They have loads of crickets in their boxes, and the boxes last me about 2 weeks.
    I love Neon Gecko!

I've been going to Neon Gecko (Glasgow) for almost 2 years now. I love the shop. Of course there are negatives about every shop- eg. prices, or not having ideal viv sizes- but every animal I have purchased from Neon Gecko has been healthy and given me no problems. They've helped me with sick animals, have always been extremely honest with me, let me see various animals out and have given me an invaluable amount of advice. Davy and John have been incredible to us both and very helpful.

The Paisley shop I have been in less as I didn't know about it for ages- it has more exotic animals in normally and probably a better layout. I've seen Andy rescue a bearded dragon that was in while the owner was on holiday after it was bitten by it's house-mate and it got nursed back to health. They let me see the golden tegu out several times before I bought her to get me used to handling her.

Everyone is friendly and Davy refuses to get wild caught animals in the shop so I trust them that I won't be passing on parasites etc when I buy an animal. The tokays we got from there were captive bred and are so friendly you can stroke them. There are alot of reptile shops opening up and many of them are terrible. I'm grateful Neon Gecko is there or I'm sure I'd have had alot more problems with no-one to turn to. I'd have probably given up on reptiles completely.

Thanks to both stores and I hope they remain open for a very long time.

I think is the rescues that cause them to have the odd negative comment here and there, cause people see the animal in there with an illness or toe missing, wound etc. Doesnt matter that NFS is on the top of the viv. Some people will not think to just ask are away to tell everyone.
